Shadows
I terribly enjoyed the exercise from last week and I was really looking forward to repeat the experience. However this time I couldn’t find an assignment that was specific enough yet let freedom to explore. I had only a few ideas floating indistinctly in my mind.
And with these I headed out to the city center without a specific focus or topic. To make things worse it started to rain heavily. I found shelter in a tram stop and waited for the rain to pass. After some time the rains turned into a drizzle and I again ventured out. As the clouds parted the summer sun brought back some warmth and color. The light created strong contrasts with heavy dark shadows that caught my eye.ù
I came across an empty drinks table covered in rain droplets surrounded by some lush plants. I think the colors in this image work well: the white table top is balanced by the black shadows and the golden outer rim complements the deep greens of the plants. I also like the back of the chair poking out of the left corner embracing the table.

A few meters away I found a set of orange and green plastic chairs outside a cafe. I focused on the contrast between the colorful highlights and the dark shadows. The lines also work and they give an interesting cut to the image.

As I continued to walk I saw a mural on a brightly lit wall. Again the contrast between light and shadows was startling. The colors seem to come out of the darkness, the ocra color of the surface matches the grey of the corner and the street sign give a characteristic Luxembourgish touch to the image.

The next composition that caught my eye was a bright red door directly hit by the sun. I couldn’t resist taking a photo. But to do so I walked straight through some people sitting outside a cafe. They looked at me with a mix of surprise and incredulity. They probably couldn’t see anything interesting in a white wall and a red door. But I for sure did.

Continuing with the empty chairs theme, in the last photo I again focused on light and shadow. The angle at which the light hits the wall highlights its texture beautifully, you can almost feel its crispness. The colors work but the composition is not very strong and I really wished I had included some more empty room on the left to give the scene some more breathing space.

Despite the lack of a clear direction at the beginning of the photowalk I’m pleased with the images I took and how they turned out.
